Factors To Keep In Mind Before Opting For Any Skin Treatment

In the present day, the concept of beauty has attained a whole new dimension. The main essence of beauty, that is dermis or skin, is now considered a very important aspect of our social lives. There is lots of emphasis in the society to have a clear, smooth and glowing skin. With this increased emphasis, the number of skin treatments in the market has also shot up. Countless treatments have also evolved as a result of this manic obsession with beautiful skin. And although most of the treatments assure spot-less skin within weeks, very few treatments deliver immediate results. Sometimes, even though the quality of treatment is reasonably good, it doesn't yield desired results because of unsuitability of skin. There are also certain other properties - which when not correctly corresponded, can diminish the impact of even the most trusted of treatments. Following are some of the factors to keep in mind before zeroing on any skin treatment:

Type of Skin

Determine what type of skin you have. Do you have a dry or oily dermis? Is your skin allergic? Ask these questions to yourself, and if you can't come to a definite and precise conclusion through self-knowledge, then consult a dermatologist and get it figured before opting for any treatment.

The type of dermis plays an important role in deciding the consequences of any skin treatment on your body. The basic types of dermis found in humans are: dry, oily and sensitive. Most of the times, it is found that sensitive skin is allergic to certain things. However, the reverse may or may not be true. All these three skin types, react differently to the same skin treatment. For example, an oily skin produces excess amount of sebum, which is a oil-like viscous liquid, thus often clogging the pores. So, any skin treatment involving much oil won't automatically be good for such oily skin. Similarly, for a dry skin, a little bit of oil in the skin treatment is essential to retain the moisture. A skin treatment devoid of oils will make the dry skin rough, flaky and looking parched. For those with sensitive skin, the inclusion of sensitive chemicals in a skin treatment can have an adverse impact on the dermis. Hence, it is of great importance to know the nature of you skin before subscribing to any treatments.

Reason for the Skin defect
If you are suffering from any skin defect, it is important to know the exact reason behind its cause before jumping to any skin treatment. Because, like there are different treatments for different skin types, there are also different skin treatments for skin defects with different causes. The major types of skin defects are either because of a skin condition or harmful UV rays of sun. However, it is seen that sometimes hormonal changes and even one's diet is responsible for defects like speckles. For example, constant exposure to sun sometimes leads to pigmentation and a change in the skin texture. Heightened exposure to sun can also result in sun damage, which may be in the form brown spots, abnormal discoloration, and patches as well as crusty skin. Similarly, hormonal changes during puberty can cause acne, and an imbalanced diet can lead to dark circles. Since the skin of humans is very sensitive, it is essential to deal with such defects using appropriate methods.

Artificially-induced skin defect & Naturally-occurring skin defect
Most of the times, the dermis is originally in its pristine form. However, over a period of time, it undergoes wear and tear and abrasion. Sometimes, this wear and tear of dermis is artificially-induced, while the rest of the times it is naturally-occurring. In the case of a skin defect, it is very important to know which of the two above sources it belongs to. The logic behind it is quite simple: something which is not naturally-occurring, is a result of an activity. When this activity is terminated, its effects also disappear. So, in the case of artificially-induced skin defect, the knowledge of which step you are putting wrong is enough, and a skin treatment may not be altogether needed. In the case of naturally-occurring skin defects -- which sometimes also includes birthmarks -- there are several scientific techniques to erase them or at least diminish them. Resorting to the popular scientific and other advanced techniques is probably the best way to get permanently rid of naturally-occurring skin defects.

Recovering After Back Surgery

Back surgery is a procedure that reduces chronic pain and increases mobility for many people. It also requires a very long period of gradual recovery. Individuals who are recovering from one or more surgeries will need to take several precautions in order to ensure that the body heals properly. Instructions from doctors and therapists must be followed exactly. Additionally, taking steps to treat scars and strengthen the muscles in the area will reduce the long-term negative effects of the operation.

Pain Management

Effective pain management after the operation will help to make the recovery period go more quickly with fewer complications. Medications that are provided should be used as instructed and only when necessary. Ice packs and other forms of relief that do not involve prescription drugs will help as bones and muscles start to heal. During this period, the side-effects of any pain medications that are taken need to be considered. Issues such as constipation, drowsiness and nausea must be planned for in advance, since mobility will be limited until after the pain has started to subside.

Move And Stretch As Instructed

A large part of recovery after back surgery is physical therapy. It is important to listen to what therapists and doctors say during a session. It is equally important to follow any at-home routines that have been prescribed. Failure to continue physical therapy after leaving the hospital or clinic will eventually start to slow down the healing process. Physical therapy will also help to keep scar tissue loose so that problems with attachment do not occur.

Treat Scarring

All surgeries leave some type of scarring. This is particularly dramatic for certain types of back surgery. The scars can be dealt with in a number of ways so that the final appearance when healing has completed is minimal. One of the most common and effective ways to treat scars is to use a silicone-based scar cream. This cream can be applied to the area once healing has started and it is safe to treat the area. This type of scar cream reduces the redness of the tissue and helps to align the collagen that causes raised or noticeably inflamed areas. After a sufficient amount of treatment, the scar will be less noticeable than one that has not been treated at all.

Arrange For Regular Assistance

There will always be points during recovery from back surgery where some assistance will be required. It is important to schedule regular visits from a friend, family or medical professional. Even a short visit will help to keep a household in order while providing an extra set of hands to apply a scar cream to the back or to change the bedding.

Reducing The Appearance Of Scars After Knee Surgery

Knee surgery is a procedure that helps to restore mobility and independence to a large number of people. New arthroscopic techniques have reduced the amount of physical trauma patients experience during and after the procedure. Additionally, the recovery time afterwards is lessened for many patients who receive this kind of advanced care. Patients are always left with some scarring after the surgery has been completed. There are a number of treatments that are possible in order to reduce the appearance of scarring and assist in proper recovery.

Massage And Physical Therapy

The scarring that occurs after knee surgery often affects areas above and below the skin. Some of this tissue becomes dense and starts to make the knee feel stiff. One common way to help reduce the appearance of a scar beneath the skin while also loosening the tissue is to have regular massages and to engage in exercise or physical therapy every week. The correct type of massage combined with a good exercise routine will increase the flexibility of the area and prevent scars from forming harmful bonds with important tendons. Particularly active individuals will need to have therapy for quite some time, since the tension from the knee causes scar tissue to regenerate over time.

Silicone Creams

Silicone has become one of the most popular ways to reduce the appearance of scars on the skin. A silicone scar gel is applied to the surface of knee after the wound has closed, but before the final layers of tissue have fully formed. The gel will reduce the swelling that causes some of the discoloration and restore the skin to a more natural appearance. Additionally, a silicone scar gel that is applied soon enough will assist in regulating collagen around the area resulting in long-term scar fading. A silicone scar gel is particularly effective after knee surgery, because the scars are normally hypertrophic.

Plastic Surgery

Scar tissue inside of the knee is almost never removed surgically. Certain formations on the skin, however, can be treated with plastic surgery if other options are unavailable. These procedures involve the use of ablative lasers, microdermabrasion and even skin grafting. The results are not always consistent and some treatments will actually increase the density of the scar tissue. Lasers are gaining acceptance for use in cases where large keloids form that stop the patient from being able to bend the knee freely. Removing the surface of the scarred skin with microdermabrasion techniques will temporarily reduce the appearance of scars but will also reduce sensitivity in the area.

Skin Pigmentation Disorders

Skin pigmentation disorders
are relatively widespread, often resulting in substantial stress in patients because their outward appearance is involved. Most of the concerns raised are simply aesthetic, but some skin pigment changes may indicate more serious, underlying conditions, such as lupus. All skin pigmentation disorders are directly connected to the quantity of skin pigment, melanin, that is present. A skin disorder with an excess of melanin is known as hyperpigmentary, whereas a disorder with a shortage of melanin is termed hypopigmentary. Loss of pigment in hair can result in white hair.

The following are examples of skin pigmentation disorders:

Melasma

Melasma is a very common hyperpigmentary disorder in women, which affects the parts of the body exposed to the sun. Excessive exposure to the sun and tanning will make the condition worse. The main areas affected are the cheeks, forehead, the upper lip and chin. Although women are more frequently affected, it can arise in men, but only accounts for 10% of reported cases. An excess of hormones is usually involved, such as the use of the oral contraception, pregnancy and endocrine disorders. In fact, some 30% of women taking oral contraception develop melasma. It can also be connected to some cosmetics, some medications and liver disease. Treatment of melasma may involve skin lightening agents, camouflage through using makeup, avoiding tanning and refusing any medicine known to have a causative effect.

Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a disorder that causes loss of pigment by destroying melanocytes, the melanin carrying cells. The actual cause is unknown, although many experts believe that genetic factors are involved, since 30% of vitiligo sufferers have another affected family member somewhere in their family tree. It can affect all races, but is more noticeable in those with darker complexions, with men and women affected equally. The more frequently affected areas are the face, back of the hand, wrists, armpits, abdomen and the genitals. Treatment can be very difficult, and may include topical steroids, surgery and ultraviolet light exposure.

Tinea Versicolor

Tinea versicolor is a superficial infection of the stratum corneum, the outermost of the 5 layers of the epidermis, caused by the yeast, Malassezia furfur. It flourishes in more tropical climates, although it can be found worldwide and in all races. It consists of many, small circular hypopigmented lesions, frequently developing on the torso. These areas become more noticeable during the summer, as they do not respond very well to tanning. Elimination of the infection is difficult, with very high rates of re-occurrence. Topical antifungal medicine is typically used to treat the infection.

Any injury to the skin may result in skin pigmentation changes, causing either an increased or decreased area of pigment production. Inflammation may be considered to be a type of injury, and as such may also lead to pigment changes. This is a rare but well known complication of plastic surgery using laser therapy. Skin pigmentation disorders as a result of injury appear to be more common in people with more natural pigment than in fair skinned people.

As mentioned, skin pigmentation disorders are difficult to treat, and may involve potentially dangerous drugs and expensive surgery. Clearly, this may not be appealing or practical for all, and many sufferers seek alternative treatment options.

For example, many vitiligo sufferers have turned to a natural approach to treatment, using herbal extracts and vitamins, together with diet and lifestyle changes. This method is a proven and successful vitiligo treatment approach, with the added advantage of no dangerous side effects.
